Tax exemption rules

What qualifies for tax exemption?

Goods sold to travelers and other short-term visitors to Japan.

①非居住者(日本国内に6ヶ月未満の滞在者)である方
(1) Non-residents: persons who stay in Japan for less than 6 months
②日本国内にある事務所にて勤務していない方
(2) Persons not working in an office or other place of employment in Japan

How to claim tax exemption

①購入時にパスポートが必要です。
(1) Present your passport at time of purchase.

♦ If you cannot present your passport, you cannot claim tax exemption.

②消費免税商品は出国するまで開封できません。
(2) Items you buy must remain unopened until you leave Japan.

♦ If the package is opened when before leave Japan, you will have to pay consumption tax.

③税抜5,000円以上~50万円であること。
(3) Excluding tax, the cost of the items must be between 5,000 yen and 500,000 yen.

♦ You can buy a maximum of 500,000 yen per store per day.

④購入日より30日以内に日本国外に持ち出すこと。
(4) Items must be taken out of Japan within 30 days of purchase.

♦ If you do not have the items with you when you leave Japan, you will have to pay consumption tax.
